Vernon's Population Growth Slows: An Aging Community (2026)

Vernon's population growth is at a standstill, and the city is aging rapidly. This trend has sparked a debate about the future of the community.

The Numbers Don't Lie

According to Statistics Canada, Greater Vernon's population estimate for 2025 is 73,500, a mere 357-person increase from the previous year. This 0.48% hike is the lowest since 2010-11, a concerning statistic for a city that has prided itself on its vibrant community and growth potential.

The average age of residents in Greater Vernon is now 47.1 years, the oldest it has ever been since Stats Canada began tracking in 2001. This aging population is a stark contrast to the city's vibrant past, with the senior population experiencing the most significant growth, increasing by 2.4% in 2024 alone.

Aging Population, Declining Youth

The senior population now makes up 28.5% of Vernon's residents, a significant shift from the past. Meanwhile, the youth population (aged 0-14) has decreased, dropping from 9,550 to 9,443. This trend is a cause for concern, as it indicates a potential decline in the city's future growth and vitality.

But here's where it gets controversial: Vernon is not alone in this trend. Other Okanagan cities, like Kamloops and Kelowna, are also experiencing a slowdown in growth. Kamloops saw a 0.2% shrinkage, while Kelowna, once known as Canada's fastest-growing city, has lost that title.

And this is the part most people miss: the province of British Columbia grew by 0.5%, and Canada as a whole grew by 0.9%. So, why is Vernon's growth rate so much lower?

This question has sparked a debate among residents and experts. Some argue that it's a natural progression as the city matures, while others suggest it's a sign of a potential economic slowdown or a need for more attractive amenities to retain and attract younger residents.

What do you think? Is Vernon's aging population a cause for concern, or is it a natural progression? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss the future of this beloved community.
