Are you tired of the same old hibachi experience? Toro Japanese Steakhouse in Vero Beach is redefining what a family-owned Japanese restaurant can be.
Nestled in the former home of Takara Japanese Restaurant, Toro might look familiar at first glance, but don't be fooled by its unassuming exterior. Under the passionate leadership of Novia Rudiarta and a dedicated family team with Indonesian roots, Toro has undergone a culinary transformation.
While the hibachi grill still sizzles with energy, Toro offers a more nuanced dining experience.
Our group of four was promptly seated in a quieter section, greeted by a staff whose warmth and attentiveness set the tone for the evening.
We kicked things off with a sweet potato sushi roll ($6.59), a delightful blend of crispy tempura and a subtle sauce that vanished in seconds. This was followed by comforting miso soup and a refreshing salad with a classic ginger dressing.
And this is the part most people miss: Toro's menu goes far beyond the typical hibachi fare.
We ventured into their extensive offerings, selecting a vegetarian tempura platter ($18.99) bursting with fresh vegetables, each piece lightly battered and perfectly crisp, accompanied by a generous portion of fried rice. The tofu yaki udon ($15.99) was a revelation – chewy udon noodles tossed with stir-fried tofu and onions, seasoned to perfection.
For the meat enthusiasts, the eight-ounce New York strip steak ($25.99) was a standout. Thinly sliced and expertly cooked, it was paired with a flavorful teriyaki sauce and a vibrant medley of sautéed vegetables. Our final choice, a bento box ($24.59), showcased Toro's versatility: crispy chicken katsu, tempura vegetables, a California roll, and fried rice, each element a testament to their culinary skill.
But here's where it gets controversial: Can a family-run restaurant truly compete with established chains in terms of consistency and quality?
Toro's answer is a resounding yes. Throughout our meal, the staff's professionalism, attentiveness, and genuine hospitality made us feel like cherished guests.
Toro Japanese Steakhouse may occupy a familiar space, but its dining experience is anything but ordinary. It's a refreshing take on Japanese cuisine, one that deserves a place on your must-visit list.
