Prepare yourself for a fresh take on a beloved classic! Hollywood never truly lets go of its intellectual properties, and soon, a new series on Peacock will revive a cult favorite from 1989 that many fans hold dear.
Joe Dante’s film "The ‘Burbs" was groundbreaking for its time, cleverly satirizing the tediousness of suburban life while revealing the sinister secrets lurking beneath the surface. The narrative revolves around a young couple, portrayed by Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher, who stumble upon a Satanic cult in their seemingly ordinary neighborhood. Despite its modest box office earnings of $49 million, the movie has cultivated a dedicated following over the years, and now viewers will have the opportunity to enjoy a contemporary adaptation. The upcoming series on Peacock is set in modern times and draws inspiration from the themes and visuals of Dante’s original work.
According to the official plot description, this new version of "The ‘Burbs" centers on "a young couple who reluctantly move into the husband’s childhood residence. Their lives are turned upside down when a new neighbor arrives across the street, unearthing long-buried secrets of the cul-de-sac and exposing them to new, deadly dangers that disrupt their peaceful existence."
Keke Palmer and Jack Whitehall will take on the leading roles, although they will not be reprising Hanks and Fisher's characters. They will be supported by a talented ensemble cast that includes Julia Duffy, Paula Pell, Mark Proksch, and Kapil Talwalkar.
The limited series is created by Celeste Hughey, known for her work on "Palm Royale" and "Dead to Me," and boasts executive producers such as Seth MacFarlane, Brian Grazer, and Dana Olsen, who penned the original film.
IndieWire has named "The ‘Burbs" one of the most anticipated TV series of 2026. Our film critic Ben Travers highlighted two significant reasons for excitement surrounding the show.
"You have two solid motivations here: either you adored the original film featuring Tom Hanks and think its premise is ripe for a modern twist, or you’re simply a fan of Keke Palmer. She’s incredibly talented and deserves her own spotlight! Plus, with a supporting cast that includes comedic talents like Paula Pell and Mark Proksch, she might just have landed a role in a series that showcases her skills brilliantly."
Mark your calendars! All eight episodes of "The ‘Burbs" will be available for streaming on Peacock starting Sunday, February 8. Don’t miss the trailer below!
