This legendary player, a six-time champion of the tournament, last visited Australia in 2020 and will be featured prominently in the opening ceremony, participating in a doubles exhibition match alongside tennis icons like Andre Agassi, Patrick Rafter, and Lleyton Hewitt.
Federer shared his thoughts on the budding rivalry between Alcaraz and Sinner, stating, "The competition between Alcaraz and Sinner is truly exceptional. I believe that final at the French Open was something special; it was a significant moment for our sport, which may not have needed it, but it certainly added to the excitement." He further noted, "The way they’ve continued to compete against each other in subsequent finals is impressive. Both players are striving to outdo one another, and it's been thrilling to witness their growth over the past few years.
Having practiced with them a bit, I can attest to their phenomenal ball-striking abilities. There’s so much potential still ahead for both of them, and my hope is that they remain injury-free."
In the first round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park, Alcaraz is set to face Adam Walton from Australia, following the draw ceremony held on Thursday. Meanwhile, Sinner, who holds the second seed, will kick off his title defense against Hugo Gaston from France.
As both players pursue historic achievements in Melbourne, it remains uncertain whether any competitor can match their prowess. Alcaraz, currently ranked as the world’s No. 1, aims to become the youngest male player ever to achieve a career Grand Slam at just 22 years old. While he has already claimed victory in every other major event twice, he has yet to progress beyond the quarter-finals at the Australian Open.
On the other hand, Sinner will strive for his third consecutive title in Melbourne, hoping to defend his championship against Gaston.
In the men’s draw, fourth-seeded Novak Djokovic finds himself in Sinner’s half and will meet Pedro Martinez in his opening match. Djokovic, who boasts an unprecedented ten Australian Open titles to his name, is looking to make another deep run in this, his 22nd season of Grand Slam competition.
The tension is equally high among the women, as Iga Świątek, the No. 2 seed, aims to complete her own career Grand Slam with a seventh major title. Świątek, a semi-finalist in 2022, will start her campaign against a qualifier but faces a challenging path ahead in the bottom half of the draw. Potential matchups could see her up against two-time champion Naomi Osaka, the 31st seed, fifth seed Elena Rybakina, and Amanda Anisimova, the fourth seed, in successive rounds.
At the top of the women’s draw, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is on the hunt for her third Australian Open title. Last year, Sabalenka faced defeat in the final against Madison Keys, marking her third consecutive final appearance in Melbourne. The Belarusian, who recently clinched her 22nd WTA title in Brisbane, will begin her quest at the Australian Open against France’s Sarah Rakotomang Rajaonah.
