North Hampshire Repair Cafe: A Success Story in Waste Reduction

Volunteers at the North Hampshire Repair Cafe have achieved an impressive feat, saving an estimated 2,670 kilograms (420.4 stone) of waste from landfill since the project began four years ago. This initiative, part of an international community of over 2,500 groups, aims to reduce waste by offering free repairs for sentimental, old, or damaged household items.
The cafe's lead organiser, Derek Prior, is proud of this accomplishment, stating it as one of his greatest achievements. Each month, volunteers from Hartley Wintney and Rotherwick host repair sessions lasting four hours, involving more than 30 dedicated individuals.
These volunteers bring a range of skills to the table, from restoring beloved teddy bears and stitching clothes to sharpening knives and fixing electronics. Some even take items home to complete the repairs, showcasing their commitment to the cause.
Beyond the technical skills, volunteers also contribute to the smooth operation of the cafe, managing the website, greeting customers, and even serving chocolate biscuits. The repairs are offered free of charge, with donations welcomed to cover operational costs.
One remarkable success story involves Annette Cotterill, who brought a terrarium purchased 50 years ago as a wedding gift from her late husband. A volunteer skillfully used a lead line to fix the glass, restoring it to its former glory. Cotterill expressed her joy, stating that it's like bringing a memory of her husband back to life, a sentiment that resonates with many.
The cafe also serves as an educational platform, inspiring others to reconsider their waste habits. Gill Harden brought her grandchildren to the event as a half-term activity, aiming to teach them about sustainability. She hopes to instill the values of repair and responsible consumption in her children.
The initiative's impact is further emphasised by a BBC research study, which found that Hart District Council collected 34,997 tonnes of waste in 2023/24, equivalent to 342.9 kilograms per person. Every repair and every volunteer's effort contribute to reducing this household waste.
Derek Prior emphasises the cafe's mission, stating that everyone understands the wrongness of throwing things away. He finds the greatest satisfaction in seeing the smiles on customers' faces as they leave the cafe, having found a solution to their repair needs.
