In the realm of anime, where fantasy and reality intertwine, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid stands out as a captivating tale of a lonely dragon's quest for love. This candy-colored, realm-hopping anime takes us on an extraordinary journey, blending elements of sword and sorcery with modern-day technology, particularly smartphones. But here's where it gets controversial... Is it possible for a dragon to find love in a world dominated by technology?
At the heart of this story is Miss Kobayashi (voiced by Mutsumi Tamura), a salarywoman who finds herself entangled in a dragon-filled adventure. The protagonist's pivotal moment comes when she casts a spell to boost the local mobile phone signal, a nod to the modern-day connection between fantasy and technology. During the climactic battle, it's Kobayashi who dials up extra help from Kanna (Maria Naganawa), one of the dragons in human guise who has invaded her life and demanded a smartphone.
Kanna is highly sought after, as the forces of chaos and harmony in the dragon dimension clash. Her father, Kimun Kamui (Fumihiko Tachiki), arrives at Kobayashi's flat, demanding either her return to fight or the dragon orb she has loaded with manna. Kobayashi, offended by his saurian sangfroid, refuses to give Kanna up. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that human mage Azad (Nobunaga Shimazaki) has been stoking tensions between the two factions, adding a layer of complexity to the conflict.
The Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid manga, which ran from 2013-2024, likely explored the domestic tribulations of running a foster home for dragons. This feature-length take, however, focuses on a promising comedy of manners. Kobayashi, with her duty of care, tries to win over the blockheaded Kimun Kamui to a more human and paternal outlook. But her letter-writing campaign, as Kanna puts it, "Yeah, argument thread!," is quickly overshadowed when she is sucked into dragon-land, and the obligatory power-engorged brawling begins. Despite pleas for gentleness, the traditional fantasy elements remain prominent, reflecting the unforgiving nature of the genre.
While the film looks undeniably lush, ranging from kawaii cuddliness for primary-school changelings to a decorous high-fantasy register, it struggles to break free from the generic sword and sorcery questing. Without further mobile phone calls or other incongruous 21st-century interruptions, the film gets lodged in the familiar territory of fantasy adventure. But is this a bad thing?
