Ivanka Trump's ambitious real estate venture in Albania has ignited a heated debate, pitting locals and conservationists against the US president's daughter and her husband, Jared Kushner. The project, a 1,400-hectare private island and five miles of beachfront in the Mediterranean, has sparked protests and concerns over its environmental impact, particularly on a protected natural area.
The proposed development, backed by Kushner and Ivanka Trump, includes the transformation of a former military base on Sazan Island and an undeveloped stretch of beach called Pishë Poro-Narta. This beach is part of the Vjosa–Narta Protected Landscape, a haven for endangered species like monk seals and nesting sea turtles, as well as over 200 bird species, including flamingos and pelicans.
Conservationists, led by BirdLife's Europe director, Ariel Brunner, have raised alarms about the project's progress. They claim that excavators and trucks were spotted digging up the beach and laying gravel without any signs of permits or licenses. This lack of transparency has fueled suspicions and protests, with demonstrators carrying pink flamingo cutouts to symbolize the habitat's vulnerability.
The Albanian government, however, has downplayed the project's commencement, insisting that environmental impact assessments are ongoing. Prime Minister Edi Rama has also emphasized the involvement of international investors and architects from Japan, Denmark, Turkey, Greece, and France, suggesting a broader collaboration.
The controversy extends to the legal framework, as a recent change in nature laws in 2024 exempts luxury resorts of 5 stars or more from environmental restrictions. This legislative shift has drawn criticism from BirdLife's Brunner, who views it as a remarkable and brutal blow to environmental protection. The European Commission has also expressed concerns, highlighting the project's potential environmental impact and its inconsistency with EU regulations.
Environmental groups and media have yet to access permits or planning documents, making it challenging to assess the project's full scope. Ivanka Trump, in her podcast interview, acknowledged the project's scale, promising hotels, resorts, and wellness facilities while emphasizing the importance of understanding and respecting the local culture.
The debate rages on, with conservationists and citizens demanding transparency and protection for the wild coastline. The project's future remains uncertain, as investigations by SPAK, Albania's special anti-corruption prosecution office, and the potential for further legal changes hang over the development.
