Prices for domestic heating oil have climbed in Northern Ireland as the regional crisis in the Middle East unfolds, with some bookings showing increases of over £100 from the previous week.

Yet, one supplier in County Armagh listed the same quantity at £395 on Monday, while another in County Down advertised 500 litres for £425.

In Northern Ireland, about 62.5% of households heat with oil—the highest share among the UK nations.

The CCNI noted that crude oil prices are rising and remain volatile in the near term due to the conflict, while they keep a watching brief on developments.

Iran warned ships against transiting a vital southern waterway, a route through which roughly 20% of the world’s oil and gas are transported.

‘Another hurdle for households’

BBC News NI spoke with people in Belfast’s city centre about how higher oil prices might affect daily life.

Ben Turner commented that the public has grown accustomed to various price increases, and this is another rise that households will have to endure. He emphasized that rising fuel costs will strain already tight budgets.

Turner added that higher fuel prices could influence how people plan day trips, especially with improving weather, and may marginally raise the cost of trips to popular destinations like the North Coast if fuel climbs further.

Natalie, a resident of Glengormley, described the oil price increase as putting significant pressure on families.

“It’s another layer of cost on top of the cost of living, and now with the oil price up, everything feels more expensive,” she said, noting groceries and other essentials have also risen.

Kenneth McClernon warned that if fuel for cars rises, the impact would be most pronounced for drivers, joking that prices keep creeping up and rarely drop. “With prices as they are now, you’re better off walking,” he quipped.

Barbara Foster from Portstewart expressed a cautious outlook, hoping the spike won’t last long and noting that summer is approaching, with an eye on more stable prices by autumn.

‘Who knows where the prices will land’

Motoring journalist Ian Lynas, based in Portadown, warned that elevated oil costs may persist for months. He said the burden would reach small businesses and everyday traders—shop owners and market stalls alike—facing higher heating bills.

Lynas bought 500 litres of heating oil last Friday for £309, but by Monday morning the price had risen to £415.

Practical tips for finding cheaper oil

  • The CCNI recommends not accepting the first quote and suggests bulk purchasing when possible.
  • Joining a local heating oil buying group can help communities pool orders and negotiate better rates from suppliers.
  • The NI Housing Executive runs a free oil savings network open to all homeowners and renters, while the NI Oil Federation offers a pre-payment option at https://nioil.com/paypoint/.
  • Fuel stamps enable budgeting by allowing residents to buy stamps at local retailers and redeem them for oil deliveries.

Why NI prices are spiking remains unclear

John Campbell, Economics and Business Editor for BBC News NI, notes that global wholesale oil prices rose about 6% on Monday, a modest uptick given the broader crisis in the Middle East.

Brent Crude neared $80 a barrel, well below the post-invasion peaks of over $100 seen earlier. Nevertheless, some individuals report oil prices for home heating oil rising by more than 30% since the weekend.

The reasons for this sharper rise are not fully understood and may remain unclear, partly because heating oil suppliers aren’t required to disclose pricing explanations to regulators.

As always, the guidance for consumers remains to shop around and compare quotes.
