Get ready for an exhilarating start to the 2026 FIM Supersport World Championship! The Australian Round has kicked off with a bang, and the WorldSSP field is already delivering an intense battle.
The Pole Position Showdown
Jaume Masia, the Spanish sensation, has secured the pole position for Race 1, an impressive feat considering his dominant performance during testing. Masia's 1'32.115s lap time showcases his potential as a title contender, and he's ready to lead the pack on Saturday. But here's where it gets interesting: Oli Bayliss, the local hero, is hot on his heels, finishing just 0.172s behind. Bayliss, an Aussie rider, set an impressive pace and will be aiming for home glory. And this is the part most people miss: Valentin Debise, making his debut with ZXMOTO, has secured a front-row start, an incredible achievement for the new Chinese manufacturer.
The Second Row and Beyond
Can Oncu, riding for Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing, showed great speed during testing and will lead the second row from P4. Tom Booth-Amos, despite a crash at Turn 11, managed to secure P5. Philipp Oettl, after some adjustments, improved to P6. Albert Arenas, in his first-ever WorldSSP Superpole, managed to secure a spot on the third row. Matteo Ferrari, Ondrej Vostatek, and Mattia Casadei all had impressive performances, with Casadei unfortunately crashing at the high-speed Turn 11.
The Challenges of Turn 11
Turn 11 proved to be a tricky corner, with three riders taking a tumble. Oliver Konig, who had a tough day with tech issues, also suffered a high-side crash. Roberto Garcia had a crash at Turn 5 but walked away unharmed.
The top six riders have set the pace, but the race is far from over. Who will emerge as the champion? Will the local hero Bayliss claim victory on home soil? And what about the debutant Debise and his ZXMOTO team? These questions and more will be answered on Saturday.
