E-Bike Safety Crackdown: What You Need to Know! (2026)

A bold move is being proposed to tackle dangerous e-bike riding in London: seize the bikes! This controversial suggestion comes from the UK Government's transport minister, Lilian Greenwood, who unveiled a new road safety strategy.

Greenwood emphasized the need for all road users, including e-bike and e-scooter riders, to follow the rules and be respectful. She highlighted a concerning trend: "Some of the people who are riding e-bikes will be riding illegal e-bikes."

The Nottingham South MP shared her concerns about e-bike riders breaking the law, riding on pavements, and speeding. She believes the police have the power to take action and hopes they will do so, especially in cases where riders are acting dangerously and anti-socially.

But here's where it gets controversial: the strategy also proposes reducing the alcohol limit for novice drivers and those within their probation period. This would mean a significant drop from the current 80mg per 100ml of blood to around 20mg. For all other drivers, the level would be halved.

The strategy aims to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by a significant margin: 65% by 2035, and 70% for children under 16. It's an ambitious goal, especially considering the steady decline in road deaths over the years, from 7,763 in 1972 to 1,602 in 2024.

Other measures include mandatory sight tests for drivers over 70, a minimum learning period for new drivers, and a crackdown on uninsured drivers and illegal number plates. The strategy also proposes alcolocks for convicted drink-drivers and new powers to suspend driving licences for suspected drink or drug-driving offences.

This strategy has been described as a "radical reframing of road safety" by Edmund King, president of the AA. Nicholas Lyes from IAM RoadSmart praised the measures as "robust policies" to improve road safety. However, the British Beer and Pub Association warns that rural pubs could be negatively impacted by the proposed alcohol limit reduction.

What do you think? Is this strategy a necessary step towards safer roads, or does it go too far? Share your thoughts in the comments!
